Middle East Pay in Asia!

Middle East Pay in Asia?

Too good to be true?

Not according to Scanit!

Scanit, the leading IT security company in the Middle East has announced that it is now heavily recruiting for its new operations in Malaysia. When asked what the key driving factors were for making this move, CEO David Michaux said that he was ‘chasing the talent where ever he could find it, and as we found a good technical pool in Asia, so this is our next step’.

Scanit who are also the Gold sponsors of HITB in September, launched a recruitment site earlier this year focused at attempting to bring fresh technical talent to the Middle East market, ‘we have over 50 IT security jobs currently posted from clients all over the Gulf region’ said David ‘our clients need hands on people who can help to really secure their infrastructures’ he continued.

Not looking for qualifications or certifications, the Scanit team will be bringing a number of their recruitment customers, including some of the major banks and telecom operators from the Middle East, to perform direct interviews with interested candidates at the upcoming HITB event. ‘We will performing live interviews, both technical and personal, and hope to be able to help our customers fill some of their vacancies directly at the event’.

When asked if Scanit and their customers were looking at Asia simply to find cheaper labour, David quickly replied that ‘Scanit has a uniform payment structure irrespective of nationality or geographic location, and I believe that if you are among the best, you should be paid the same as your counterparts’. Salaries in the Middle East range from approximately 3,500USD per month to over 8,000USD, depending on your skill level and experience. ‘Scanit has the reputation of being the best in the security consultancy market in the Middle East, and I will make sure we keep that reputation when we move into Malaysia’.

Candidates who are interested in signing up for the upcoming recruitment drive can register their interest by subscribing to the recruitment portal at http://hr.scanit.net, the Scanit team have promised to give everyone a fair chance.

Google Summer Of Code 2007 is here!

without comments

For the past 3 years since 2005, Google has been supporting Open Source projects in the form of the Summer Of Code.

==
What is Google Summer of Code?=
Google Summer of Code is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects. Google will be working with several open source, free software and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Historically, the program has brought together over 1,000 students with over 100 open source projects, to create hundreds of thousands of lines of code. The program, which kicked off in 2005, is now in its third year, following on from a very successful 2006.

While the majority of past student participants were enrolled in university Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs, GSoCers come from a wide variety of educational backgrounds, from computational biology to mining engineering. Many past participants had never participated in an open-source project before GSoC;others used the GSoC stipend as an opportunity to concentrate fully on their existing open source coding activities over the summer.

Several 2005 students went on to become mentors in 2006.

Personally, I had a friend from MMU who successfully apllied and participated in SoC both in 2005 and 2006. Do take note that each successful completed project will be rewarded with a stipend of USD$4500.

Student Applications are open now and will be closing by March 24th. Please take note in this case Open Source covers everything from Linux, to Open Source Website Frameworks, Content Management Systems, Graphic software and lots others not mentioned here. So if you are interested, do take a look at http://code.google.com/soc/ as soon as possible.

Important timelines of the project can be seen at http://code.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=60325&topic=10729 .

LinuxSIG has an IRC Channel!

without comments

Correction: It’s freenode.net not .org

There is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel created under the Freenode server, irc.freenode.net and the channel name is #linuxsig. Linux Special Interest Group (LinuxSIG) is a special interest group of Linux at Multimedia University Melaka Campus.

IRC details:
Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: #linuxsig

There’s a HOWTO guide posted in the mailing on how to connect to the channel.

Open Source Alliance Cyberjaya will be using this IRC channel to combine LinuxSIG and OSA-Cyber together.

Confusion of "Open Source" and "Free Software"

without comments

Sources:

http://www.opensource.org/docs

Free software is now in the term of liberty: “”Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price”, http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

In 1998, a part of the free software community splintered off and began campaigning in the name of “open source.” The term was originally proposed to avoid a possible misunderstanding of the term “free software,” but it soon became associated with philosophical views quite different from those of the free software movement., http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html

Open source is a development methodology; free software is a social movement. For the free software movement, free software is an ethical imperative, because only free software respects the users’ freedom.

My approach:

is to Free Software which is complies to the 4 principles of Free Software, the freedom to run the program for any purpose, the freedom to study how the program works and adapt it to your needs, the freedom to redistribute copies so u can help your neighbor, the freedom to improve the program and release ur improvements to the public so that the whole community benefits. Free Software that can be paid to get the software.

Open Source Aliiance Cyberjaya under my maintenance is approach to Free Software. Open Source definition is ambiguous to this group but will be considered since it’s based on Debian Free Software Guidelines.
